Deccan Development Society

The Deccan Development Society (DDS), is a two and half decade old grassroots organisation working in about 75 villages with women’s Sanghams (voluntary village level associations of the poor) in the Medak District of Andhra Pradesh. The 5 000 women members of the DDS represent the poorest of the poor in their village communities. Most of them are Dalits, the lowest group in the Indian social hierarchy.
Achieving community sovereignty is the primary mission of the DDS through work with very vulnerable sections of rural communities, namely women and Dalits. The DDS believes that the greater the community sovereignty achieved, the higher these vulnerable peoples’ chances of survival are.
